Akritas

The shrines of Akritas were built in-between November 2006 / July 2007 and January 2011. Here today's ambient sounds meet the Berlin Krautrock 1970s garage atmosphere. In other words, "kosmische Musik" with a strong educational twist-and-shout! Akritas is not a record in the usual sense of the word, but rather a "record" of certain things that passed us by during the years. Or it could be seen as exploration into areas of music not visited before. The songs were created by reforming material composed and recorded earlier on. They changed so much that there may be nothing in common with "the original version". In the beginning of Shrines we decided to keep all songs alive with improvisation, so that every time we play it will be different, and possible records are only variations on a theme.

The soundscape was made of chords and a-tonal noise, with literary quotations in spoken word and distant voices on the background. A new kind of approach to listening is required. The songs really are like shrines, references to something that has happened, to guide you to the ways of Akritas.

The story can be recalled by these references.

But recorded music is always a kind of shrine, not living. Music is LIVE when it is played in time, with real instruments and by real players. Akritas is a shrine, but sometimes it is useful to build one, if not necessary, in order to keep alive the things and the themes of.....

It is worth noting that we were travelling a lot when making the record. In autumn 2007 Antti Filppu and Mika Pekkola were island hopping in Greece (visiting places like Patmos and Naxos, both islands playing a part in Shrines), while Matti Rautaniemi went to India (bringing some of the themes and instruments along with him). In August-September 2009 Filppu travelled to Greece again, this time crossing the border lands of Digenis Akritas in the north, including the ancient site of Philippi (seen twice from the bus window). Mika had been to Crete already in 2005, and so the spirit of Kazantzakis has been with us all the way. Neither should we forget the Greek writer's pilgrimage to Athos. And of course Antti would see the holy mountain, too (twice from the boat deck, and from the unforgettable islands of Thassos and Limnos). These little tourist glances and memories may or may not have been important in the creation process.

All music was eventually mixed (using material from "the original" recording  sessions began in July 2007), by Pekkola and Rautaniemi at the Russian Room studios in Espoo during 2009-2010. All vocals were recorded by Filppu in five days (3rd and 5th of June, 4th of July, 21st and 23rd of August 2009) at the City Red Light Studio in Alppila, Helsinki.

-Kalevala, runo XLV/ Uuden laulun Kalevala, 39. laulu

Meidän Jumalamme sisin olemus on kamppailu.
-Nikos Kazantzakis / Askeesi

"Mikä on tämän kamppailun tarkoitus? Suuri Henki on näiden inhimillisten kysymysten yläpuolella. Tuulten ruusu!"

If the cities fall and if the cities fail
we'll go back to them the olden places

Where the spirits are high

where the spirits are high
where the spirits are high

If the cities fail if the cities fail

we'll go back to them the olden places

WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH

WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH
WHERE THE SPIRITS ARE HIGH

If the cities fall if the cities fail

we'll have to go back to them
the olden places....

Where the spirits are high

where the spirits are high
where the spirits are high

All the names of God will be there

all the names of God will be there

WHERE HAS ALL THAT FAITH GONE

WHERE HAS ALL THAT FAITH GONE
WHERE HAS ALL THAT FAITH GONE

"Ei vaan tyhjensi itsensä
ja otti orjan muodon
tuli ihmisten kaltaiseksi

"Toista on tieto asioista, toista totuuden tunteminen. Kuten aurinko jättää varjoonsa kuun, niin on jälkimmäinen edellistä hyödyllisempi."
"Älä kieltäydy oppimasta olitpa kuinka viisas tahansa."
"Joka ei vapaaehtoisesti ota kantaaksen vaivoja totuuden tähden, joutuu tahtomattaan kärsimään paljon pahempia vaivoja."
-Pyhittäjä Markus Askeetti

Digenis Akritas

Cf. the epic poem Digenis Akritas (of the Byzantine hero Basileios who had a Muslim father and a Christian mother). Digenis means "twice born / two blood", and Akritas is "one who guards / fights on the border(s)". This song is an updated form of the old theme - Akritas in the year 2007 (with the financial crisis waiting to be unleashed; and so it was, during the construction of this album. Capital is god given, but is it a sum of money? Can it be stored or used to control others? It comes from the Spirit, always returning there). Music was composed by Mika Pekkola, and arranged by Shrines. Vocals and lyrics by Antti Filppu. The construction and editing of music and vocals by Mika Pekkola.

We have to face the ghosts
and know it all............

No church ever helped without pity
yes, all living things they have a soul

They say god given coins we need here
they say god given coins we need here

"So God give me a few coins
I'm broke but I'm standing tall"

I said: "give me a few coins"
I said: "give me a few coins"

"Oh you sights and visions of my youth!
Oh all of you glances of love,
you divine momentary glances! How soon you perished!"
-Friedrich Nietzsche / Also sprach Zarathustra

Universal Flowering pt.I

V. Universal Flowering, a series of paintings by Pavel Filonov. The above picture is called "Flowers of the Universal Flowering". Music was composed by Mika Pekkola, and arranged by Shrines. Vocals and lyrics by Antti Filppu. The construction and editing of music and vocals by Mika Pekkola.

The cities were meant to fall but they were saved
for what? by whom?

-Novalis / Ensyklopedia

"Kaikki miellyttävä tunne on hankausta - kaikki miellyttävät tunteet kannustavat sielua positiiviseen myötävaikutukseen."
-Novalis / Poetisismeja

Ihmisen edessä kumartaminen on tämän lihaksi tulleen ilmestyksen palvontaa."
-Novalis / Fragmentteja ja tutkielmia

"Rakkauden teoria on korkeinta tiedettä."
"Jumala on milloin yksi kertaa ääretön, milloin yksi jaettuna äärettömällä, milloin nolla."
-Novalis / Ensyklopedia

HOLY WORDS
will they bring with them
HOLY WORDS
hope for us to breathe

LET THEM HEAL AGAIN
LET THEM HEAL AGAIN
LET THEM HEAL AGAIN

And will they bring with them
words that heal
OUR CITIES WEEPING
our cities weeping

Will they bring with them
hope for us to breathe
will they bring with them
words that heal
our cities weeping

Our cities weeping and sickened
our cities weeping and sickened

By the term "universal blooming", the artist implied a single front that would reveal and realise common human values, with the spiritual role of the artist as its constituent element. Filonov called himself an "artist of the universal blooming" and conceived every painting as an independent and organic development of artistic forms. Like many other contemporaries, Pavel Filonov addressed the canonic subjects of the New Testament, confirming their eternal relevance and high philosophical meaning.

Kenosis / Askitiki

The song title Kenosis / Askitiki by Matti Rautaniemi. Vocals and the editing of vocals by Antti Filppu. Kenosis is Greek, and was used by St. Paul in his letter Toward Philippians, to describe a certain event. Askitiki means "ascetics", but it's also the title of a book written by Nikos Kazantzakis.
